THE AWKWARD TRUTH ABOUT YOUR BIKE RACK...

Everyone loves a great rack, but sometimes they just hang out a bit too far...

Most manufacturers can and do warrant their products as compliant with Australian Design Rules (ADRs), but compatibility of a rack with a specific vehicle is the owner's responsibility.

Australian Design Rule 43/04 - Vehicle Configuration and Dimensions requires that the total rear projection, measured from your vehicle's rear axle centre, must not exceed 60% of your vehicle's wheelbase.  This is important for the safety of other road users when your vehicle is manoeuvring.

Are bike racks legal?

Vertical racks are a great solution for shuttling bikes on trail roads, however, they will overhang beyond legal limits on most passenger vehicles.

the catch with roof-mounted carriers

Your roof may carry less load than you think!

When vehicle manufacturers specify roof load capacities, they also specify limits on the height of loads to ensure a safe level of vehicle stability is maintained.

For example:

  • a Toyota Hilux can carry 60kg at a load centre not exceeding 250mm above the roof line*.
  • a Ford Ranger can carry 85kg with no part of the load exceeding 300mm above the roofline**.

Allowing for the typical mass and load centres of the racks, carriers and bikes, these vehicles are likely to be limited to a maximum of 2 conventional mountain bikes...

(Vehicle roof capacities may be further reduced if travelling off-road)
